Science Fiction

Science Fiction has been my friend, counselor, buddy, and anchor since I was about nine years old. I have sung with the Filksingers, solemnly raised Vulcan Salute, danced with the Dorsai, argued Heinleinian politcal values, wished I was a spaceman, drunk hot chocolate with Buzz Cory and Cadet Happy, been sad to see Ivonova and Kess drop out. From science fiction, I have pursued physics, mathematics, engineering, and ended up in a career that uses all of the above. The Gray Lensman and Lazarus Long were my role models, Doc Savage and Doctor Doom my fantastic other selves.

Look, I am as schizophrenic as the next man, and so am I. Each of us carries a little of everything we hate and everything we admire with us everywhere we go. If I choose to be no more craven than Obe Wan Kenobe, no more selfish than Darth Vader at the end, no more easy to fool than Lazarus Long and no less a boyscout than Kal-El of Krypton, I may be corny, but to my own self I will be true. Speculative fiction is a keynote signature of my life, and a doorway to the great literature of the mundane world (without which you cannot understand the references) and to the sciences (without which you cannot build the future) and to fantasy (without which, you have no imagination, and are as a dead man walking).

Here is a list. It will grow, and keep growing. The links have not been checked
lately, and if a link is dead, do not, under any circumstances, follow it!!!

If you understand, then drink deep, water-brother, and never thirst. If not, then, go away.
Think of it as evolution in action.

Ok, on October 14, 1997 I sat down to make a list. The above is what I
came up with, for the top twenty-five, just from my ancient memory and
personal prejudice. Several more females of the species will be added
as soon as I can check the spellings and decide as to the significance
of their contributions to MY life.

Some days, I wonder why Bradbury is not my favorite. Or, why do I not
have Gordon Dickson, a real personal favorite, listed yet? I ask myself,
"Self? How do you explain this?" So far, no revalations are forthcomming...

Vote
Now it is your turn.
Send me an e-mail, and vote for the author of your personal choice and
tell me if they need to be added, or you think they are Number 1. I will
add a column for "how many votes for Number 1" as soon as someone,
somewhere, casts a ballot.

If I have a clue as to who you are voting for, I'll add them.
If not, I'll read them.
Regardless, I reserve the right to my own rankings, so there!
Now, just to keep you interested, here are some links.
